I remember one of the first times I felt insulted.

I was around 9 or 10 years old. Like many of you, I’ve been the butt of a joke or two before, but some insults, no matter how trivial, tend to stick more than others. And this one stuck.⁣

⁣My brother called me gullible.⁣

⁣I know, I know. Call out the troops, right? It’s just, the way he hurled the term at me made me feel dumb.⁣

⁣I carried this label into my early adulthood. I gave out benefits-of-doubt like candy at a parade, or that one time with Oprah and the cars. I should have been more cautious but, you know… gullible. And I have battle scars to prove it. ⁣

⁣I share this story so that you know you’re not alone. Those wounds you have from childhood and heartbreak, that church hurt that’s weighing you down, it makes sense. People are mean and they’ll often do or say anything to others when they’re struggling themselves.⁣

⁣It can be hard to shake the hurt when you feel like you’ve been wronged. Even harder when you don’t have the right tools to heal. One helpful way I’ve found to combat negative experiences and thoughts is through the power of positive affirmations.

⁣Studies show that our lives are heavily influenced by our thoughts and words. Creating affirmations has helped me in my emotional wellness journey by shaping a more positive outlook on life.
