How to Get to Know God Better

In the thick of a challenge, if you’re like me, you talk to yourself: “You’ve got this,” “Get it together,” “You just need to try a little harder.” Sometimes, the pep talks are the fire you need to keep pressing. Other times, you roll over in defeat and promise yourself that the next time things will be better.

But how do we know things will really get better? This is where faith comes in. FAITH IS COMPLETE TRUST OR CONFIDENCE IN SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. Spiritually speaking, it’s fueled by an understanding of God’s character and his love for us. (Galatians 5:6, kjv) And all you need is a little bit, a mustard seed if you will, to plant and nurture for your faith to grow. (Matthew 13:31–32, niv)

Here are a few ways I’ve learned to nurture my faith

Read and get an understanding of God’s character

When reading the Bible, it’s important to gain an understanding of the scriptures within a spiritual and historical context. This will help a lot with rightly interpreting meanings. Although we’re now living under grace (also knowns as the New Covenant), the Old Testament has some great stories that demonstrate who God is and how he cares for his people. There are also some wild stories, but understanding context and God’s character will get you through those rough spots.

Remind yourself of God’s love for you

Use Google, your bible app or a concordance to look up passages about God’s love. These keywords are good places to start: love, deliverance. Write out the scriptures and meditate on them daily. Say them out loud to get them into your spirit. It’s helpful to replace the pronouns with “me” and “I” to make things personal.

Maintain your stance of faith

How silly would it be to plant a seed, dig it up, and still expect to receive a harvest from that seed? This is double-mindedness. This person can’t expect a harvest because they’re constantly uprooting their seed. (James 1:5–8, niv) No matter what, choose to believe God’s word every time. Your belief will be challenged by other people and your rational mind, but God is BIG and he does not fit into a box. The Bible is filled with promises that are available to you simply because you’ve chosen to believe. You just have to stand your ground until what he promised is fulfilled.

Like any other relationship, the only way to really get to know God is by spending time with him. You can do this through sermons and podcasts online and by listening to Christian & Gospel music, but the most intimate moments are in prayer and studying his word on your own. This way you’re getting to know God for yourself.

His word puts you in a position to hear his voice more clearly — whether that’s promptings, thoughts or an audible voice — and allows you to receive the wisdom to handle any situation and work through any confusion or doubt.

There’s so much misinformation about God and how he wants his people to live. Why not cut out the third-party info and try getting to know him for yourself. You will not be disappointed if you do!
