This is loaded and problematic for many reasons because Blackness was strategically pushed as monolithic by society, but a black mom not allowing her daughter to wear braids reeks of internalized disdain. Perhaps banning braids was a misguided attempt to help assimilate, but I’m willing to guess there were more overt and subconscious separatist behaviors from the mom.
